Bringing mathematics to life in publishing

Wolfram Research have recently announced the launch of Mathematica 6. However, this actually seems like a new product and is a big step up from previous versions. What is particulary exciting from a publishing point of view, is that the new version contains 'instant interactivity' and a 'personal development environment'. In other words, authors can develop interactive mini-applications which can be part of normal Mathematica notebook documents. In the near future it is promised that these will be viewable with the free Mathematica Player product.
See the demonstrations on the Wolfram site - (no download needed to view web versions).
e.g. Gravitational lensing of a point source or all physics demos.
It is very exciting to think of a journal article with interactive mathematical graphs & equations - and indeed we have already had queries from editors and authors about the possibility of including such interactive modules in their articles.
Well, the good news is that we will support and encourage use of this format (.nbp) as one of the 'additional files' authors can use to enhance their articles and provide a deeper understanding of their work. All journals on PhysMath Central will benefit from this and we are looking forward to seeing our first articles published making use of this great tool.
