LHC start-up delayed - but by how long?
Last week's announcement that the "inner-triplet" series of three quadrupole magnets in the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider failed under assymetric stress looks to be bad news - but just how bad, nobody seems to know yet. The fact that this was announced shortly before April's Fool Day lead to some cantankerous stories - but the fact remains that the largest experiment in the world looks like it will be delayed. Let's hope it isn't too serious as the thought of redesigning and replacing all potentially affected magnets doesn't bear thinking about.
