UK podiatrist wins national prize for highlighting foot problems in arthritis patients
A senior podiatrist from Brighton has won a national charity prize for drawing attention to the serious foot problems faced by patients with rheumatoid arthritis, which are routinely ignored and neglected. Dr Simon Otter, a senior lecturer in podiatry at the University of Brighton, has been awarded the arc prize in rheumatology for podiatrists from national medical research charity the Arthritis Research Campaign. He was presented with the £1,000 cash prize and a silver medal at the recent Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists’ annual conference in Harrogate. Dr Otter, who is based at the university’s school of health professions in Eastbourne, was awarded the prize for work based around his PhD on ‘challenging current perceptions: an exploration on the nature and extent of foot complaints in rheumatoid arthritis.’ Dr Otter highlighted the fact that the care of foot problems in people with rheumatoid arthritis is extremely patchy around the country, and need to be taken far more seriously by the medical profession. The arc prize is awarded annually by the Arthritis Research Campaign to allied health professionals working with patients with arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions.
