New publication: National health workforce - the growth of challenging trends

In October 2007, an international symposium on health workforce was held in Lisbon, Portugal, under the aegis of the World Health Organization and the Portuguese Ministry of Health.

Over three days, 75 researchers and policy-makers from 22 countries met and exchanged their views and experiences on the situation of their national health workforce, with a particular emphasis on the shortcomings and negative trends which reduce the performance the health system.

From all the papers contributed to the Symposium, 23 were selected to constitute the various chapters of this book. All together, they display a broad panorama of the numerous challenges faced today by those who are in change of the study and/or the management of their national health workforce. Naturally, the nature, magnitude, acuity, and solutions to each problem differ from country to country.

These issues constitute the three parts of the book.

Report from Kampala Forum - day 2

On day two of the week-long First Global Forum on human resources for health, our journal, Human Resources for Health occupied a central place in the Forum Market Place.

We have been exhibiting and distributing some of our more popular articles and displaying the true global nature of the journal with an interactive display which mapped out countries of focus of a broad selection of our papers.

The display was moved to Kampala from the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where it has been publicizing the journal for the last four months.

Interest in the stand and the work of the journal was high, with many delegates to the Forum subscribing to the journal at the stand and leaving comments or recommending future areas of focus for the journal's work.

HRHJ's first quarterly issue

Winter 2007: Later this year, HRHJ is planning to launch its first quarterly issue.  These quarterly issues will consist of a selection of articles all addressing a particular health workforce issue.  Our first quarterly issue shall focus on 'Health Leadership'.  It will consist of a series of articles addressing health leadership issues along with several case studies used to illustrate and provide examples of inspirational health leaders from around the world.

Forthcoming international joint special issue

In June 2008, Human Resources for Health shall lead an international joint special issue that involves more than 20 journals publishing articles addressing the broad theme, "Towards a scaling-up of training and education for health workers".  Issues such as inadequate compensation and working conditions, the deteriorating health of the workforce in many developing countries, urban/rural and workforce imbalance, and migration of the workforce from developing to developed countries shall all be discussed.

The final deadline for submissions has passed and we were delighted to receive over 200 article proposals from throughout the world concerning the critical need for a skilled and sustainable health workforce.  Planned publication is throughout 2008. There will be an online facility to respond to published articles in order to accommodate a live debate.
