Chemistry Central Journal welcomes three new editorial board members
Professor
Lavrentovich received his Ph.D. (1984) and Doctor of Science (1990)
degrees in Physics and
Mathematics from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He
conducts research in the field of liquid crystals, 3D imaging, electro-optics,
surface phenomena and topological defects. Prior to joining the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State
University in 1992, Prof Lavrentovich held visiting appointments at
the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Université Denis Diderot in France and
other universities. He is an SPIE Fellow, member of the Editorial Board of
Physical Review E and Advisor of the Kent State University SPIE Student
Chapter.
Professor Gregory R. Choppin, a Robert O. Lawton distinguished professor of chemistry at Florida State University, has joined the editorial board of nuclear and radiochemistry.
Prof Choppin's principal research interests are inorganic and nuclear chemistry, with emphasis on the lanthanides and actinides. His research makes use of potentiometry, calorimetry, NMR, and optical spectroscopy to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of complexation and redox behaviour.
Prof Choppin received his degree in chemistry from Loyola University of the South and his PhD from the University of Texas in Austin. From 1953 to 1956 he was a postdoctoral research associate the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory where he worked with Glenn T. Seaborg and his team on new elements. During that time he was a co-discoverer of Element 101, Mendelevium. In 1956 joined the department of chemistry at Florida State University where, in 1963, he was promoted to full professor. He served as chair of the department from 1968-1977 and 1993-1994. In 1968 he was appointed the R. O. Lawton Distinguished professor of chemistry.
He has received a number of awards in recognition of his contributions to chemical research, including honorary degrees by Loyala University and Chalmers University (Sweden), an Alexander Von Humbolt U.S. Senior Scientist Award, ACS Award for Nuclear Chemistry, The Seaborg Award in Separation Science, the Southern Chemist Award of ACS, the Gold Medal of the Florida Academy of Sciences, and a Presidential Citation for Outstanding service to Nuclear Science and Technology by the American Nuclear Society.
Dr Zheng Gu, based in department of chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Arizona, has joined the editorial board of chemical engineering.
