Leading the way in allergology

Two Associate Editors of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (AACI) were amongst those receiving high accolades at the Annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology held in Quebec City, Canada from 20th-23rd October. All abstracts from the conference are available in the recent supplement.

Dr Wade Watson received the Jerry Dolovich Award, and the David McCourtie Award was presented to Dr Harold Kim for their respective contributions to the society and field of allergy. Dr Watson is Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Pediatrics and is Head, Division of Allergy at Dalhouse University, with special interests in Medical Education and food allergy. Dr Kim has been a practicing allergist for 14 years, with interests in asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, drug allergy and sinusitis.

Prestigious awards were also presented to Dr Jean Marshall and Dr Mariana Castells. Dr Marshall, who received the CSACI Award for Research, has a particular interest in mast cells, with studies aiming to improve understanding of allergic and inflammatory disease, as well as cancer and viral infections. Dr Castells accepted the Bram Rose Award in recognition of her role in the field of drug allergy and desensitization. She has been a role model to allergists and immunologists for over 15 years and her role as an academic teacher, clinician and researcher continues to grow.

The awards were presented at a dinner and ceremony incorporating a highly successful, charitable silent auction in aid of the Canadian Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Foundation, which is dedicated to funding research into allergic disease as well as educating health care professionals, patients and the public about advances in the field.

Both Dr Watson and Dr Kim have also made a significant contribution to the recent supplement “Practical Guide for Allergy and Immunology in Canada” published in AACI. As stated in the introduction to the supplement, this collection of review articles aims to “provide medical students, medical residents, primary-care practitioners and other healthcare professionals with a comprehensive, yet easy-to-follow, series of articles on all of the common conditions we deal with in the field of allergy and immunology”.

AACI is the official journal of the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
