Beyond English: Accessing the global epidemiological literature

Emerging Themes in Epidemiology (ETE) recently published the thematic series “Beyond English: Accessing the global epidemiological literature”. Conceived by Mr Isaac Fung, a PhD student at Imperial College London and a member of the journal’s Editorial Board, this series aims to introduce the global community of epidemiologists to the wealth of local knowledge contained in epidemiological and public health literature in the major languages of the world.

English has long been the international language of the global scientific community. However, epidemiology and public health projects are often context-specific, emphasizing the importance of using non-English literature and databases for systematic reviews and meta-analyses in epidemiology and public health research. Articles in the series comment on and review the current scenarios of publishing science in the major languages of the world, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and also introduces readers to non-English databases.

Emerging Themes in Epidemiology (ETE) aims to promote debate and discussion on theoretical and methodological aspects of epidemiology through publication of articles like those in the series. For further information about the series, please contact Mr. Isaac Fung at i.fung@imperial.ac.uk.
